AROUND
AND ABOUT
There is so much to do, and there are so many places to visit, within
easy reach of our hotel. We wish we could list them all. Here are just
a few special places to see:
Briançon
Surrounded by old forts including le fort du Château, le fort
des Tetes and le fort Dauphin, Briancon - and it's very own fortified
town 'Cité Vauban' - offers much to see and do. With 300 days
of sunshine a year on average, you'll be almost guaranteed a special day
out in this, Europe's highest town.
Col du Lautaret and the Jardin Botanique Alpin
At 2056 metres altitude, the Col du Lautaret is one of the most breath-taking
local attractions. Just a ten minute drive away, prepare to be fascinated
by the imposing glaciers that sit so far away yet you feel you could reach
them with your hands. The Jardin
Botanique Alpin (Alpine Botanical Garden) is open between June and
September and is well worth a visit if you
can drag yourself away from the views surrounding it.
Historic town of Embrun and Lac Serre-Ponçon
Head south towards Provence and you'll come across Embrun - just an hour's
drive from the hotel. Embrun is situated in the Durance valley between
the mountains of Les Ecrins National Park and the Queyras National Park.
It has a beautiful centre, traditional market and a lake (Lac Serre-Ponçon)
which makes
an inviting swimming destination on a hot and sunny day.
La Grave-Le Meije
Take
the Glaciers de La Meije cable car at the off-piste mecca (in winter)
of La Grave-Le
Meije and enjoy the views from 3000 metres altitude. Up here you can
walk, hike, climb, paraglide and visit the ice-caves and crevasses - with
views of Mont Blanc and the Oisans and Ecrins mountain ranges all around.
Vallée Clarée and Névache
At Briancon, turn left towards Italy and then left again into the Vallée
Clarée. This is one of the most untouched areas in the Hautes-Alpes,
there is so much to enjoy here - in winter but especially in summer. Visit
the tourist office's website here.
