CLIMBING

Serre Chevalier is the perfect base for both experienced climbers and those after their first taste of boldering, scrambling or rock climbing in the Alps.

From our hotel in Le Monêtier Les Bains, venture either side of the village to find rock-climbing routes to practise your basic technique or take the Bachas chair lift up to 2000 metres (walk if you prefer) and join the Via Ferrata des Neyzets ...

What is a Via Ferrata? A Via Ferrata is a scrambling route that generally takes you over mountains and cliffs with the use of ladders, wires and rails and there are a multitude of 'introductory' and exhilarating climbs throughout the valley. Harnesses and hard hats are of course necessary as in all climbing pursuits.

Further afield in the Hautes Alpes, the climbing opportunities are endless. Less than 30 minutes drive from the hotel you can enter the Durance, Vallouise, La Clarée and Fournel valleys, and the famous graded limestone crag routes at L'Argentière la Bessée - Ecrins National Park - are a 'must-climb' for climbers of all ages and abilities.

Mondial de L'Escalade - International Climbing competition - Serre Chevalier

Such is the popularity of Serre Chevalier for this sport that the Mondial de L'Escalade (International Climbing competition) takes place here every July. Villeneuve's outdoor climbing wall is extended with a competition wall each year - see photo above.
